Welcome!
The Poetry of Jane and Ann Taylor is a blog devoted to furthering scholarship on the nineteenth-century poets, Jane and Ann Taylor, through the analysis of collected poetry from Original Poems for Infant Minds (1804-5), Rhymes for the Nursery (1806), and Hymns for Infant Minds (1810). The poems collected by myself and highlighted on this blog have been chosen either for their popularity in the 1800s, or because they exemplify key issues/themes that are recurrent throughout the Taylors' poetry. In addition, I have annotated these poems, provided further appendix material, and written a critical introduction to the collection which addresses biographical, publication, and historical contexts. It also explores issues raised in the poetry while questioning why these women are important as authors and why they are not part of the canon of children's literature.
